Lounge Around at the Lounge Cafe with your Dog – Another Pet Friendly restaurant in Yucatan

I was very excited that we were going to the beach. As an adopted Great Dane puppy, I dig sand. See what I did there? Dig?  Anyhow, when I saw my family packing my beach bag, I wasted no time hopping into the back seat of the car. They opened the window a crack so I could enjoy the smells during the road trip. No one told me we were stopping for lunch!

We pulled up in a village called Telchac Pueblo. We were on our way to Telchac Puerto. It may seem a bit confusing but one of them isn’t on the beach. I could tell straight away that we weren’t there yet because there was no sand. Apparently my humans wanted us to investigate a pet friendly restaurant that we had heard about.

Tony & Tanya, the proprietors,  were there to greet us. They were both super nice and, of course, they love dogs and even adopted one earlier this year. Kiky was her name and cuteness was her game. She came from a lovely rescuer lady in Dzilam Bravo. Tony explained that Kiky’s original name was Valky and was scared of everything when she arrived. Now she’s confident, happy, friendly, and the smiling face of the Lounge Café. Kiky and I bounced to say ‘hello’. She has a great bounce. She also had some toys that I thought should be for me. This is what happens when you’re an only dog.

You really wouldn’t expect to find a cool little hangout, as my humans called it, in such a quaint Yucatecan village. It turns out that Tony & Tanya didn’t expect it either. The Lounge Cafe just sort of happened to them. They had never run a bar or restaurant and had not planned to, but when the space became available, having an adventurous Canadian spirit, they went for it.

Did you know that there is such a thing as Canadian delicacies? Who would have thought. They serve one of these delicacies, known as Poutine, for any of you hungry people out there craving some gravy with your chips/French fries. (My family is British, so they eat their chips with salt and vinegar in our house! Just sayin’.)

Tanya and Tony pride themselves on always having everything available that is offered on the menu. Right now, it doesn’t include beer, but that’s coming soon. As they are so friendly and love to chat, you feel like you’ve known them forever and like you’re chilling with friends. I’ve love making new friends. Did I mention they love dogs?

One word of warning, before you order the double cheeseburger, disengage your jaw. Unless you have snake like super powers, you will not be able to get your mouth around it. The immense size was fortunate for me as my human needed some help to eat all of hers. The hand cut chips/fries – oh whatever you want to call them – were delish. My family also had a chicken dish – pollo rostizado – which was very tasty indeed.

The staff team at The Lounge café were sweet to me although they were kind of stunned by the size of my character and, well, just my size really. I’m kind of growing up to be a rather humongous young dog. They made sure I had fresh water and offered me treats.

I didn’t get to go upstairs at the Lounge Café because I’m not allowed to run up and down steps while I’m so busy growing, but they have a very fun looking lounge up there. Very loungey, indeed. Maybe that’s why it’s called ‘Lounge Café’. I’m a clever dog. We stayed downstairs in the bar and restaurant area which is spacious and welcoming. They didn’t have live music while we were there in the day time, but it seems that the place rocks on the weekends.

They also do insanely fabulous frappes and have specials of two for $50 pesos, which just can’t be beat. In fact, their whole menu is very reasonably priced, which makes it not only a delicious and fun place to stop, but an affordable one. So, don’t go alone. Bring your friend. Bring your dog. Bring your friend’s dog.

Telchac Pueblo is on the lovely scenic route to the beach from Merida. We recommend the trip. It’s a very scenic drive, going through small towns like Baca and villages like Dzemul. You’ll really get to experience some of the best of Yucatan and then…did I mention that we were going to the beach?

So, let me remind you of the plan. Pack your beach bag. Get excited. Head to the beach. Take the scenic route. Stop in Telchac Pueblo. Grab some tasty food and drinks at a great price. Say ‘hi’ to Tony and Tanya, and then with your full belly, get back into the car and get yourself to the beach. Once you’re there, make sure to dig a hole. Well, that’s what I do, anyway.
